EV Tire Wear Patterns — What Your Tires Are Telling You
By EV Central • MARCH 20, 2026
Your tires are like a health report for your EV’s suspension and alignment system. The way they wear tells a trained eye exactly what’s going on underneath the car. At EV Central Service in San Francisco, we inspect tire wear patterns on every EV that comes through our shop — and we frequently use wear patterns to identify underlying suspension and alignment issues that aren’t yet producing obvious symptoms.
Common Tire Wear Patterns and What They Mean
- Inner edge wear: Heavy wear on the inside shoulder of the tire usually indicates excessive negative camber — the top of the tire is leaning inward too far. This is common after suspension component wear or a hard impact.
- Outer edge wear: Wear on the outside shoulder often points to insufficient camber (positive camber) or underinflation. On EVs, outer wear can also result from cornering forces on a heavy vehicle.
- Center wear: Wear concentrated in the middle of the tread indicates chronic overinflation — the tire is riding on its crown rather than its full tread face.
- Feathering or sawtooth wear: Tread blocks worn into a sawtooth pattern often indicate a toe alignment issue — the wheels are angled in or out slightly.
- Cupping or scalloping: Uneven high-low wear patches around the circumference typically point to worn shock absorbers that allow the wheel to bounce and skip off the road surface.
EV-Specific Tire Considerations
Electric vehicles use higher-rated tires to handle their extra weight, and these tires cost more to replace. Catching alignment and suspension issues early — by reading wear patterns — saves significant money over time.
