Squeaking Noise From My Tesla — Suspension or Brakes?

By EV Central  •  MARCH 20, 2026

A squeaking noise from your Tesla can come from two very different sources — suspension components or the braking system — and the repair approach is completely different depending on the cause. At EV Central Service in San Francisco, we diagnose Tesla squeaks every day. Here’s how to start narrowing it down yourself.

Suspension-Related Squeaking

Suspension squeaks tend to occur when the car is in motion over uneven surfaces. Common sources include:

  • Dry ball joints or tie rod ends: Metal-on-metal contact within a low-lube joint produces a creaking or squeaking during slow maneuvers.
  • Degraded bushing material: Some rubber bushings squeak as they age, especially in cold or damp weather.
  • Strut bearing or top mount: A squeaking sound while turning the steering wheel at low speed is often the upper strut bearing.
  • Sway bar bushings: When the rubber sway bar bushing clamps dry out, they can squeak over small bumps and body roll.

Brake-Related Squeaking

Brake squeaks are more often related to stopping or slowing. Key indicators include:

  • Squeaking when applying brakes: Could be worn brake pads (wear indicators are designed to squeak when pads are low), glazed rotors, or brake dust.
  • Squeaking after sitting overnight: Light surface rust on rotors is normal after rain or dew. It typically clears after a few stops.
  • Squeaking from EVs that sit frequently: EVs that rarely use mechanical brakes can develop glazed pads and rotor rust even with low mileage.

If you’re unsure which system is the culprit, our team can quickly identify the source with a physical inspection and a short test drive. Don’t ignore squeaking — brake pad wear indicators squeak to warn you before metal-on-metal rotor damage occurs.
