Which Collision Shop Can You Use With Mercury Auto Insurance?

What Mercury Auto Insurance Covers

Mercury is one of California’s largest personal auto insurers and a common choice across the Bay Area. A standard Mercury collision policy typically covers:

  • Collision — repair or replacement of your vehicle after an at-fault or uninsured motorist accident
  • Comprehensive — theft, fire, weather, falling objects, animal strikes
  • Rental reimbursement — daily rental coverage while your car is being repaired (check your policy limits)
  • OEM vs. aftermarket parts — Mercury policies vary; you can request OEM (original manufacturer) parts and your shop can advocate on your behalf

Coverage limits and deductibles vary by policy. If you’re unsure what’s included, your Mercury declarations page spells it out.

California Law: You Choose the Shop — Not Mercury

This is the most important thing to know: Mercury cannot legally force you to use a specific repair shop.

Under California Insurance Code § 758.5, your insurer may recommend shops, but you have the absolute right to choose any licensed collision repair facility. If Mercury directs you to a preferred location or a “Mercury Auto Repair Xpress” shop, that is a suggestion — not a requirement.

Choosing your own shop doesn’t jeopardize your coverage. Mercury is required to pay the reasonable cost of repairs at the shop you select. If there’s a dispute over labor rates or parts pricing, your shop can negotiate directly with the adjuster.

At EV Central, we work with Mercury — and every major carrier — directly. We handle the back-and-forth so you don’t have to.

How to File a Mercury Collision Claim in the SF Bay Area

1. Report the accident. Call Mercury at 1-800-503-3724 or file online at mercury.com. Do this as soon as possible — ideally within 24 hours.

2. Get your claim number. Write it down. You’ll need it at every step.

3. Choose your repair shop. You are not required to use Mercury’s preferred network. Call us at (415) 881-1845 and we’ll get your vehicle scheduled.

4. Inspection and estimate. Mercury may send an adjuster or use a photo estimate app. We’ll coordinate directly with them to make sure the estimate covers everything.

5. Authorize repairs. Once the estimate is approved, we order parts and begin work. We’ll keep you updated throughout.

6. Collect your vehicle. We do a final quality check before you pick up. Your deductible is paid at pickup; Mercury covers the rest directly.
