EV Bushing Replacement — Control Arms, Sway Bar & Subframe
By EV Central • MARCH 20, 2026
Bushings are the unsung heroes of any vehicle’s suspension system — they’re rubber or polyurethane sleeves that cushion the connection points between metal components, reducing noise, vibration, and harshness while allowing controlled movement. On electric vehicles, worn bushings become very noticeable because EVs are otherwise so quiet. EV Central Service in San Francisco specializes in EV bushing replacement across all suspension locations.
Types of Bushings and Their Symptoms
- Control arm bushings: Front lower control arm bushings are the most commonly replaced. Worn bushings cause a clunking or knocking over bumps and can make the front end feel vague and unstable.
- Sway bar bushings and end links: Sway bar mounts use rubber bushings that harden over time. A rhythmic clunk from one side when going over dips is a classic sway bar bushing symptom.
- Subframe bushings: The subframe connects to the chassis via large rubber mounts. When these wear, you may feel a low-frequency vibration or hear a deep thud over major bumps.
- Rear trailing arm and toe link bushings: On many EVs, rear suspension geometry is maintained by several links with bushings. Worn rear bushings affect handling, cause drifting under acceleration/braking, and can trigger alignment drift.
Replacement Process
Many bushings require a hydraulic press to remove and install properly — they’re interference-fit into metal housings. On some platforms, the complete arm or link is replaced rather than pressing in new bushings. EV Central Service has the tooling to handle either approach and will recommend the most cost-effective repair for your specific vehicle.
