A vibration that appears at highway speeds — typically between 60 and 80 mph — is one of the more disruptive driving experiences in any vehicle, but it’s especially noticeable in the quiet cabin of an electric vehicle. Common Causes of Highway Vibration in EVs

  • Out-of-balance wheels and tires: The most common cause. Even a small imbalance — a missing wheel weight, a repaired tire — can cause significant vibration at speed. This is the first thing to check.
  • Bent wheel or rim: A bent wheel from a pothole hit will cause a rhythmic vibration that’s constant above a certain speed.
  • Wheel runout: A tire or wheel with high runout (not perfectly round) will produce vibration regardless of balance.
  • Worn CV joint or axle: A failing axle shaft can cause vibration under acceleration that’s most noticeable at certain speed ranges.
  • Drive unit imbalance: Rare, but internal drive unit issues can sometimes contribute to resonance at specific speeds.
  • Wheel bearing play: A worn wheel bearing can allow slight wheel movement that manifests as vibration, especially at speed.
