Liberty Mutual Auto Insurance Repair — Do You Have to Use Their Shop?
By EV Central • AUGUST 25, 2026
Getting Your Car Fixed With Liberty Mutual in the Bay Area
If you’ve been in a collision and you have Liberty Mutual auto insurance, you might be wondering — do you have to use one of their approved shops? The short answer: no. In California, you have the legal right to choose any licensed auto body shop you trust, regardless of what your insurer recommends.
Here’s what you need to know before you file.
What Does Liberty Mutual Collision Coverage Include?
Liberty Mutual auto insurance typically covers:
- Collision damage — repairs from accidents with other vehicles or objects
- Comprehensive — theft, weather, vandalism, fire
- Rental car reimbursement — while your vehicle is being repaired (if you have this add-on)
- OEM vs. aftermarket parts — California law requires disclosure if non-OEM parts are used; you can request OEM parts for newer vehicles
Always review your declarations page or call Liberty Mutual directly to confirm your specific coverage.
California Law: You Choose Your Shop
Under California Insurance Code Section 758.5, your insurance company cannot force you to use a specific repair shop. They can recommend their preferred network (called a “direct repair program” or DRP), but the choice is yours.
What this means for you:
- You can bring your car to any licensed auto body shop in California
- Liberty Mutual must work with the shop you choose
- The shop cannot be penalized for not being in Liberty Mutual’s network
If an adjuster implies you must use a certain shop, that’s not accurate — and you have the right to push back.

- Inspection & estimate — Liberty Mutual may send an adjuster or use photos/virtual estimate
- Repairs begin — Once the estimate is approved, your shop gets to work
