Tesla Clunking Noise Over Bumps — Suspension Diagnosis

By EV Central  •  MARCH 20, 2026

A clunking noise when driving over bumps, dips, or uneven pavement is one of the most common complaints we hear at EV Central Service in San Francisco. While it’s easy to dismiss as a minor annoyance, clunking usually signals a genuine mechanical problem that will worsen over time. Here’s how we approach suspension diagnosis.

The Most Likely Causes of Clunking

  • Worn control arm bushings: As rubber bushings age and crack, the arm develops excess movement, producing a clunk with each compression cycle.
  • Loose or worn sway bar end links: These small links connect the sway bar to the suspension and rattle loudly when worn.
  • Degraded strut mounts: Upper strut mounts have a bearing and rubber component that can deteriorate, especially on high-mileage vehicles.
  • Ball joint wear: A clunk combined with a slight knock during cornering can point to ball joint looseness.
  • Subframe mounting bolts: Loose or corroded subframe hardware can produce deep, resonant clunks on hard bumps.

How We Diagnose Suspension Clunks

Our diagnostic process is systematic. We start by duplicating the noise on a test drive, then lift the vehicle and inspect each suspension component by hand — checking for play, looking for torn bushings, and testing link stiffness. We use pry bars and tensioning tools to apply load to components the same way road bumps do.

Once we’ve identified the culprit, we provide a clear explanation and written estimate. Most suspension clunk repairs can be completed same-day or within 24 hours.
