My Tesla Is Making a Clunking Sound — What's Wrong?

You’re driving your Tesla and you hear a clunk — maybe just once, maybe every time you go over a bump. It’s alarming, and it should be. A clunking sound in a vehicle is almost never nothing. The Most Common Sources of Tesla Clunking

• Front lower control arm bushings: These wear out on high-mileage Model 3 and Y vehicles and produce a clear clunk over road irregularities.
• Sway bar end links: Small but critical, end links rattle loudly when worn — especially on one side.
• Strut top mounts: The rubber and bearing at the top of each strut can deteriorate, producing a clunk during cornering or over bumps.
• Loose sub-frame bolts: Occasionally, subframe mounting hardware loosens, producing a deep, resonant clunk over larger impacts.
• Rear trailing arm bushings: On Model Y especially, rear clunks during acceleration or braking are often traced here.
• Drive unit mounting: Motor mounts that have softened or cracked can cause clunking felt through the floorboard during acceleration and deceleration.
